Workshops
Workshop topics and dates will be posted as they are arranged. Your suggestions and requests for other groups are welcomed. The following have been provided to date:
Chronic Pain Management
Cognitive-Behavioural Approaches to Chronic Pain- A Program for Medical Doctors
The presentation focused on chronic pain and its interaction with psychological factors, including anxiety and depression. As a basis for discussion, it used the texts: Psychosocial Factors in Pain, edited by Robert J. Gatchel Ph.D., & Dennis Turk, PhD., and Managing Pain Before It Manages You, by Margaret A. Caudhill, M.D., Ph.D. The latter comprises the cognitive/behavioural treatment program of the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre in Boston and other facilities.
Both assessment and treatment of chronic pain were discussed and “taking control over pain”, rather than the other way around was emphasized by examining the mind-body connection. A demonstration of biofeedback as one means of gaining control was given. New research into the use of Virtual Reality as a pain control process was provided.
