Depression Management Program

Individual Treatement

Treatment for depression is provided in two formats. It may be provided individually using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Dialectic Behavioural Therapy. Typically around ten sessions are needed to achieve a reduction in symptoms. In addition, a group program has been developed.

Group Program

The depression management group is based on the “Mind Over Mood” model, a programme that was developed in 1995 by Greenberger and Padesky. It is appropriate for functioning adults struggling with symptoms of depression. The program has a cognitive- behavioural orientation, is grounded in empirical literature, and focuses on the connections between current thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Participants will learn skills to help manage problematic thought patterns that can increase distress. The format combines the presentation of information about depression with skills training such as goal setting, behavioural activation, and thought challenging. Homework assignments are given weekly and reviewed during the following session.

The facilitator, Dr. Leah Hatton, is a Registered Psychologist.

Screening

All potential participants will have at least one interview with a psychologist for assessment of suitability for the group and orientation to the group format and expectations. Measures such as the Beck Depression Inventory, Beck Anxiety Inventory, and Personality Assessment Inventory may be used for screening as well as program evaluation purposes.

Group Format

The group will be closed (no admissions after it commences).

It will begin on Tuesday October 4th, 2011 and will run for eight sessions held once per week for two hours starting at 1pm.

The group will offer participants:

  • A supportive and confidential environment.
  • The opportunity to meet others with depression.
  • Strategies geared toward stress reduction and behavioral change.
  • Increased awareness of problematic behavioral patterns and strategies to change these patterns.

The group will take place at 218 - 284 Helmcken Road (View Royal Square at the corner of the Helmcken and the Old Island Highway) at the offices of A. T. Malcolm & Associates.
